Welcome to Fern & Thistle, thank you for visiting my little corner of the internet! I’m Jennie – founder, creator and maker – everything you see here has been designed here in my Manchester studios by me. I’ve spent the last few years building up my business and watching it thrive is a dream come true. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and have a constant urge to create so I knew I needed to work towards a career where I was able to make all of the creative decisions and fufil my creative urges! Renovating our family home helped to cement this decision – I felt frustrated with the run of the mill shelving available so took it upon myself to create my own sideboards shelves and mantels. There evolved what you now see in all of my work, the unique Fern & Thistle finish!
Every one of my creations is handmade using laser design before being sanded and waxed. I use re-claimed scaffolding wood and the joy of creating something new from something old remains as exciting to me now six years on as it did when I first created the windowsills in our family home. Seeing something old and tired come to life in a new form is the very essence of Fern & Thistle and something I’m really proud of. By using reclaimed wood in my work I can play a small part in making our world more sustainable and every time you choose a Fern & Thistle creation you’re a part of that too.
My range is designed to evoke the senses. Meaningful wording combined with beautiful shaping, texture and eye catching design enveloped in that soft smell of raw wood. An experience to touch smell and see. More recently I’ve expanded my range to include homeware items which has allowed my love of botanical to seep in. You’ll now see some of my range dressed with beautiful faux and dried flowers, the perfect compliment to wood and a unique finish to dress your home.
“My range is designed to evoke the senses.”
Home is in essence what Fern & Thistle represents. I love that my 2 young boys can watch me do what I’m passionate about and my husband is hands on with cutting wood for me and discussing designs. My family are the very reason I do what I do.
The hugest thanks for visiting and taking the time to read my story and explore my online shop. My hope is that my creations brighten your day and bring joy to you every time you see them.
